在過去幾個星期，全球媒體都在關注所謂的「西伯利亞獨角獸」。「西伯利亞獨角獸」曾在2.9萬年前於西伯利亞生活過。但與童話故事中看上去很可愛的動物不同，他們實際上是類似毛茸茸的犀牛。
據俄羅斯衛星通訊社報導，「西伯利亞獨角獸」這種古生物非常特別，以下為「西伯利亞獨角獸」5個奇特的小知識。
一、「西伯利亞獨角獸」飲食習慣十分奇特。儘管「西伯利亞獨角獸」個頭巨大（一頭成年獨角獸可能長5到6米，重5噸多），但牠的食物卻主要由植物塊根與鱗莖組成。這種動物可以在地裡打洞，把可吃的植物塊根莖挖掘出來。牠沒有門牙與犬牙，所以牠刨洞時用的是堅硬的角質唇部。科學家們推測，這個物種比長毛象存活更久的原因，或許是因為牠的飲食習慣起到了作用。
二、「西伯利亞獨角獸」可以證明西伯利亞氣候曾經很溫暖。「西伯利亞獨角獸」的遺骸是在西伯利亞平原南部發現，但這非常奇怪，因為牠們被認為是喜溫動物。先前，有人認為這些動物不曾生活在這個地區，因為這裡天氣太冷。但發現「西伯利亞獨角獸」的遺骸意味著南西伯利亞的氣候並不像人們從前所想的那麼冷。
三、「西伯利亞獨角獸」滅絕的原因仍舊是個謎，科學家認為，很可能是獵人們導致「西伯利亞獨角獸」的滅絕。科學家透露，應該不是冰川導致獨角獸的滅絕，因為「西伯利亞獨角獸」曾經歷了4至5個冰河世紀。
四、這種神秘動物的角，就像外表的其餘部分一樣，與童話故事中的形象一點也不像。「西伯利亞獨角獸」的前額上有個約35公分長，15公分高的穹頂骨突起。可是，除了主要的角之外，獨角獸還有另一個角。動物學教授亞歷山大·布朗德特注意到，獨角獸鼻骨前部的粗糙度小，這說明存在第二個角。自19世紀以來，科學家們就嘗試復原「西伯利亞獨角獸」的外表。
五、「西伯利亞獨角獸」的鼻口部頂端有個低角板，但角是由角蛋白形成的，就像我們的頭髮和指甲一樣，因此幾乎不能保存下來。古生物學家們只是根據獨角獸這種動物頭骨的結構來推測角的存在。
